The flood situation in northern Bihar has taken a severe turn, with rising water levels in major rivers causing widespread devastation across several districts. According to the Disaster Management Department of Bihar, more than 10 lakh people have been affected so far, with over 500 villages inundated. Crops spread across thousands of hectares have been destroyed, livestock losses are mounting, and hundreds of families have been displaced, forced to take shelter on highways, embankments, and temporary relief camps.
Transportation has been severely disrupted, with many roads and rail routes under water, cutting off access to interior regions. Rescue operations are being carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administration. Over 40,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations, but rescue teams are facing difficulty reaching remote areas due to strong water currents and continued rainfall.
Relief measures are underway, with the government setting up over 200 relief camps and distribution centers for food, water, and medicines. However, complaints have emerged regarding the lack of coordination and delays in aid delivery. Many flood-affected families are still waiting for basic necessities like clean drinking water and dry food packets.
Health concerns are also growing in the wake of the floods, with cases of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and skin infections being reported from several relief camps. The state health department has dispatched mobile medical units to the worst-hit areas, but accessibility remains a major challenge.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conducted an aerial survey of the affected districts and has urged central authorities to release more funds and send additional rescue teams. He also appealed to citizens to cooperate with officials and prioritize safety.
The worsening flood situation in northern Bihar underscores the state’s long-standing vulnerability to monsoon-related disasters. Experts have once again called for better river management, improved early warning systems, and sustainable infrastructure planning to mitigate the annual impact of floods.
With more rain forecast in the coming days, authorities remain on high alert, hoping to minimize further damage and provide timely assistance to the millions in distress.
